Alfred and Bertha (Emily's mum) in the centre.
I would guess that the 3 women to the left of Alfred are his sisters, Caroline (34yrs) sitting next to him, Blanch (26yrs) with a hand on his shoulder and Rosa (24yrs) with a hand on her chin.
Perhaps the gentleman between the sisters is one of Alfred's brothers, possibly James or Harry. |

Bertha was brought up by her grandparents and lived alongside her aunties. She had 3 Whitbread aunties and there are 3 women on her side, so they may be, Jane (29yrs) sitting, Phoebe (35yrs) behind and Elizabeth Whitbread (52yrs) with a hand on Jane's shoulder.
The 2 men at the back could be Bertha's uncles.
Bertha's mother is unknown. Bertha did actually have a brother John who was a year younger than her who was also looked after by their grandparents, he doesn't seem to be in this picture.
Shortly after her brother John was born her father joined the Royal Navy and signed up for 10yrs. I wonder whether her mother died in childbirth as Bertha and John in the 1881 census are living with their grandparents. When their father left the Navy in 1883 he married Priscilla Tees and together they had 5 children. |
